Homemade Pretzels Recipe

Ingredients (nutrition)

  • 1 lb flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 7 fl oz warm milk

Preparation (instructions)

  1. Put a large pot of water to boil
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degree F. Grease a baking sheet.
  3. Put about 3 oz flour, baking powder, yeast, sugar, salt, butter and milk in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Mix until smooth and the yeast starts to froth.
  5. Fold in remaining flour and continue mixing until it forms a dough.
  6. Knead the dough until it is smooth and supple.
  7. Make into a ball and set aside in a warm place until the ball size is doubled.
  8. Punch down the dough and knead for about 1 minute.
  9. Divide into 6 equal pieces.
  10. Roll or cut each piece into a rope and twist each rope into a pretzel shape.
  11. Allow to rest for approximately 5 minutes.
  12. Slide the pretzels into the boiling water one at a time.
  13. The pretzels are cooked when they float to the top of the boiling water.
  14. Remove immediately, drain off and place to the greased baking sheet.
  15. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until golden.
  16. Ready to serve.
